الشرح: The activity continued from lunch up to a past moment (it started to rain), so we use had been + verb-ing; 'since lunch' highlights the duration.
"Ali hadn't flown before his trip to Rome." Which sentence has the same meaning?
الإجابة الصحيحة: (د) Ali's trip to Rome was the first time he had flown.
الشرح: hadn't flown before means the Rome trip was his first flight. The story is in the past, so we say had flown, not has flown.
"They had been missed the last train, so they took a taxi home." Which of the following corrects the mistake in this sentence?
الإجابة الصحيحة: (ج) had been missed → had missed
الشرح: The past perfect is had + past participle: had missed. 'Had been missed' is passive and can't have an object (the last train).
"After Mona had locked all the windows, she left the house." Which sentence has the same meaning?
الإجابة الصحيحة: (أ) After locking all the windows, Mona left the house.
الشرح: 'After + verb-ing' can replace 'after + had + past participle' when the subject is the same: locking the windows came first, leaving came second. The other sentences reverse the order.
"Having been told about the delay, the passengers went back to the café." Which sentence has the same meaning?
الإجابة الصحيحة: (د) The passengers went back to the café after they had been told about the delay.
الشرح: Having been told means first they were told (passive), then they went back. So after + past perfect passive had been told.

الإجابة الصحيحة: (ج) had the clerk printed
الشرح: How many asks about a finished number of things, so we use the past perfect simple, not a continuous form. By the time + a past verb (closed) shows the printing was complete before that moment.
"Karim went to bed after he had finished his report." Which sentence has the same meaning?
الإجابة الصحيحة: (د) Karim didn't go to bed until he had finished his report.
الشرح: 'Not … until' + past perfect means the second action (going to bed) happened only after the first (finishing the report) was complete. The other sentences are wrong or reverse the meaning.
